John McCain on The Daily Show

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

Don't forget to tune in to The Daily Show tonight to see John McCain's historic 13th appearance on the show.

Or do forget. What do I care? It's your business.

UPDATE: What I've learned from this interview so far -

  1. He's not sure what his Secret Service code name is, but thinks it's "Jerk."
  2. If he were to wear a propaganda t-shirt, it would have to be glow in the dark.
  3. John McCain has an excellent sense of comedic timing.
  4. McCain's out of context "100 years"quote was taken out of context.
  5. Politics is dissimilar to to bean bag.
  6. Dwight Schrute? WTF?

Many thanks to Sgt. Pepper Politics for live blogging McCain's appearance in the comments below. And many thanks to him for not linking to his own blog in every comment.

  1. I could not be more disgusted w/Jon's wimped out interview w/mc-insane. Jon giggles like a school girl around the repub but can manage to be rude to Dem Howard Dean. Mc-insane is a rabid rightwinger masquerading as a moderate & Jon let him get away w/it one more time - why?? Stewart could not hold him accountable for any of his flip flops on serious issues...it was downright painful to watch.

  2. Jon-did you play softball because you're afraid of McCain's famous temper?

  3. Jon, I'm really disappointed in the way you wimped out and pandered to McCain. There is no excuse for you failing to hold his feet to the fire on how he has abandoned his prinicples to pander to the neo-cons and the religeous right. How could you fail to show his previous statements that the religeous right are dangerous nut cases and contrast that with his current sucking up to them? How could you fail to show his previous statement that we need to bring the troops home and contrast that with his more recent comments about leaving behind a military base?

Jon -- You're usually my hero. The McCain interview showed your feet of clay. "Disappointing" doesn't capture the depth of my disappointment...

  4. As an avid and loyal TDS viewer, I have never been more disappointed in Jon Stewart than I am today.

It was Softball City last night, and I'm embarrassed for Stewart. He goes after McCain plenty when he's not on, but was a lapdog last night. And I'm not asking for a full-on assault, just some fair-minded, probing questions.

If you're going to mention Rev. Wright, ask about McCain's flip-flopping in pandering to the religious right. Ask him about Rev. Hagee, whose endorsement McCain has enthusiastically embraced and whom McCain has refused to repudiate.

If you're going to address McCain's attitudes toward women, ask him about his anti-choice stance.

If John McCain is going to wring his hands about rough Americans have it today, ask about his very questionable economic plans. Ask him why he totally reversed field regarding tax cuts during war time, for example.

There was no mention of the long list of McCain staffers and supporters who have found themselves in the sort of sex scandals that got Clinton impeached. No mention of McCain's illegal and hypocritical campaign financing missteps. No mention of all the lobbyists McCain has added to his staff in recent months. No mention of McCain's misstatements regarding the Sunni and Shiites. And when he did go after him in the tiniest way regarding his sucking up to Bush, he let McCain slide with the lamest of responses.

    Very disappointing.

It would be one thing if Stewart was consistent in playing nice with every guest he has on. But he isn't. He's civil and respectful to everyone, which I appreciate, but he's asked plenty of hard questions in the past.

Stewart dropped the ball last night, and, as far as I'm concerned, he'll come in for some of the blame if we end up with President McCain and four more years of the insanity we've endured for the past eight years.

  5. It must be really hard for McCain, a moderate, to run. He is essentially a moderate republican- something closer to a classical libertarian than a conservative. He was always a maverick and had been accused of being a democrat in the past. He is very centrist and I think that is great for the country. The fact of the matter is, if he doesn't appeal to the conservatives, a third party candidate could kill him and we could be sitting with an inexperienced Obama in office. I don't think it is fair to say McCain would be the third term of Bush. They are incredibly different. There is something wrong with the entire system because you need money to run- lots of it- and you sometimes have to pander. I wish there was a way to ban campaigning and just allow press coverage and debates to decide an election. But then again, the press is extremely liberal and biased (ahem, Mr. Stewart)

  6. Two choices this Nov:

Energy #1: Positive, hopefull, optimistic, revolutionary, power by the people, diplomacy over aggression, INSPIRATIONAL.

Energy #2: Resentful, hateful, spitefull, full of revenge, Bush Pt. 3, dare I say negative (I'm their worst enemy?!), completely out of touch with the people.

Yeah lets keep it going huh? 81% say America is on the wrong track, and Energy #2 is that wrong track.

  7. Personally, my father and I have been throwing the idea of McCain/Clinton ticket since 2006. I can't say it would be the best thing ever, but it could possibly be more fair and balanced. Or we can go back to the days when the two people the American people have just spent what seems like 7 years going to primaries for and the winner of the two is President and the loser takes vice? Or is that too complicated?

I don't think I'll vote for McCain at this rate.

  9. "I am their worst enemy"!!!!! So does this mean the enemy of my enemy is my friend? Or the enemy of my friends is my enemy? WAR MONGERER!!!!! McShame is the undead who will roam the earth sucking blood out of our military, average citizens, and any "attractive" wemen that cross his path. My mouth fell open watching this man...just the thoughts of him in the Oval Office urged me to pull out my stakes & crucifix...

  10. Who are you McCain supporters kidding? A vote for McCain is a vote for George Bush! Hell no I would not support him! I will support whoever turns out to be the Democrat nominee!
