The Daily Show with Jon Stewart: You Probably Don't Understand the Iraq War

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

Former Bush Administration Under Secretary of Defense Douglas Feith was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight to set the record straight on the Iraq war. Apparently we were not mislead misled into war. I believe him. Unless he's misleading me now...

Anyway, Jon started summer early by firing up the grill and sticking Feith on it. Listen to the defense of a man who was in the room when all the planning went down and decide if it flips your script.

  2. I especially enjoyed Feith's statement that, "Gross errors were made in how we talked about the war". Most people would simply call it lying.

  3. This was an amazing interview. I wish the mainstream
media would have the guts to ask question of this caliber.

Thoughtful, knowledgeable, and respectful was my overall
impression. We sure could use more of this attitude
in news, government and everyday life.

    Go Jon!

  4. I only hope Jon is still on the air when GWBush writes his book (or, more correctly, his English interpreter ghost-writes it), so that Jon can give him such a workover. Have we created a new verb, as in "That sumbitch was really feithed by that interviewer" ? Jon Stewart is still the smartest interviewer in town. Bless his inquiring black little heart.

  5. Once again, Jon Stewart shows us what we're not getting from the mainstream media outlets. Excellent interview, extremely intelligent questions from a comedian that missed his calling as a investigative journalist. He really had him squirming. A few minutes into it, I'll bet Feith was wishing with all his might that he'd never heard of The Daily Show!!

  6. Jon,

Brillant interview! Technically speaking, you tore Doug a new one! As you brought out in the interview, Feith was the 'errand boy' tasked with coming up with evidence to support an already established policy to sell it to the American public.

One point I wish you had brought up was his involvement in setting up the administration's own intelligence analysis agency designed to come up with evidence that would justify the invasion, because the legitimate ones were not telling the administration what it wanted to hear -- never once did the intelligence community conclude there was evidence of Iraqi WMD programs or possession of weapons. The result was this office latched onto one uncorroborated, single report as proof of active Iraqi programs -- a report that had been dismissed as bogus across the board.

This is one man who is deserving of jail time, not profiting from his 'I was there' memos.

  7. Dear Daily Show Smartniks,
Your ears must have been burning, because (once again) I said to my husband after watching that interview that Jon is sooooooooooooo smart. Once again he calmly asks the questions that aren't being asked by the media to those in power. Questions that deeply (to the 10th power) need to be asked, especially to a guy who is saying something somewhat equivalent to: the Holocaust never occurred. Jon asks these questions for so many of us who have have had our jaws dropping in disbelief for the last 7+ years at what havoc is being wreaked. What I also loved very much about Jon during this interview was there was not one drop of disrespect to Feith. I thank you so much for the opportunity today to repond to what I thought was a profound moment in contemporary media coverage. -Susan Rosenfeld

  9. After all the accusations from all Feiths of aiding the terrorists or we didn't know what they knew at the time, now it has come down to 'we didn't explain it well enough'? Are we hearing the protestations of an Administration in its last throes? Jon, what did you expect an alleged war criminal to say. "Please forgive my colluding to wage an aggressive war .... Furthermore please forgive my participation in the conspiracy to cover up all of this criminal activity." He was lying at the very beginning what about the memo written in 1995?

  10. I enjoyed the uncut interview and Jon's efforts as always, but I'm disappointed that the network news media has become so lazy. They let us down leading up to and in the early days of the Iraq War and they still give this miserable administration a pass on every issue. Remove those lapel pins . . .they contain some sort of mental blocking signal . . .and really support America by asking the hard questions and demanding answers. That's the job of the news media, Jon's job is to entertain us, not the other way around. In the meantime I'll keep watching Jon Stewart to get my news. Thank you.
