The Daily Show with Jon Stewart: You Probably Don't Understand the Iraq War
Former Bush Administration Under Secretary of Defense Douglas Feith was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight to set the record straight on the Iraq war. Apparently we were not mislead misled into war. I believe him. Unless he's misleading me now...
Anyway, Jon started summer early by firing up the grill and sticking Feith on it. Listen to the defense of a man who was in the room when all the planning went down and decide if it flips your script.

what a great example of how to deprogram someone!
Bravo, Jon!
I honestly don't understand what could have possessed Feith to appear on The Daily Show. Jon regularly kicks his guests' behinds, and said guests usually have a modicum of intelligence -- did this man seriously think there was a chance in a million that he would come out of this looking good?
This was a great interview, I agree with most of the other reactions above. Love how Jon stays respectful and gracious but unambiguously sticks it to this joker. A word to the wise, though... you can't have the United States Undersecretary of Defense on your program and still call it "just" a comedy show.
Jon . . .
Sweet!! Thanks to the wanting to make a buck, and-or hope to massage history; these folks who create so much suffering with their actions, keep writing books. Without the need to promote their books, how else would you get a chance to ask honest questions, in you're direct manner. What does it say, that often you ask the most direct to the point questions, of anyone in or out of the media. Since most of them don't promote on progressive blogs, without you, we would be left wishing someone would ask the questions we would ask.
This interview of Feith is a classic! Without needing to say it, you made the point . . . either they are complete incompetent fools, or they lie through their teeth. The argument he made, i.e. "Mistakes were made", and "you don't understand what they were thinking", gives no other option I can think of!
Jon, dare I say . . . You are a true patriot! Thank you! It's refreshing to see someone with the public voice you have, use it ethically and honestly to ask those who act in our name, to account for the horror they cause. If we ever meet, I'm sure we will have an engaging conversation. Much respect, (as John Mcbush would say . . . ), "My friend"!

I know a lot of the buzz is how much better Jon seemingly conducted this interview than anything a "real" newshound would have done. I'm going to out myself and say, I don't watch news so I really have no idea how he stacks up to the talking heads on TV.
I will say: I listen to the news on NPR and I know he can go toe to toe with a Juan Williams or Robert Siegel. The clips people are suggesting would have been difficult to impossible to prepare for a live interview. The thing is, the reason this particular interview is stunning is because it's on point, it doesn't get distracted by cheap jokes and doesn't use other tricks that "real" news wouldn't have due to their live nature. Jon had to call Doug Feith on the carpet on the basis of what he could recall on the spot. And he did a damned good job.
Furthermore, I really have to commend Jon on keeping calm and composed. I have a tendancy to lose my temper when speaking with any Bush faithfuls. I don't think I could keep from leaping over a desk to choke a White House schill who kept telling me I was wrong in my outlook because I was judging the run up to war based on hindsight. I don't take being insulted or interrupted very well, but Jon just let that blow past him, listened carefully what was said and tore the rationale to shreds.
BRAVO!
Great interview. I appreciate that Jon didn't joke around during the interview. Sometimes he goes off because he is uncomfortable(like the Lynn Cheney where he should have destroyed her when she said that there were no more terrorist attacks on US soil forgetting the rest of the world like it didn't matter.) This was a serious subject with one of the forces behind the biggest failure of our government ever.
I also think that you should air all the uncut interviews online. I hate it when i see a cut in the interview.
such clear corruption and no1 to release us from these greedy man
only willing to smoodly get his(there, whoevers)side of the story as what happend or how they experienced it?? hahaha
people are dieing and without food or water, fighting for something they do not understand nor benefit from!
what will be next ?????????
how far will this have to go and to achieve what??uncorrupted order?? like there has ever been something like that!
NEVER
we are doomed
may all u good people make the best of it
Thanks for posting the entire interview and announcing that we could find it here. Jon did a great job of voicing every rejoinder I've had for Mr. Feith's rationalizations, so I personally felt a measure of satisfaction at the end of the interview. I'm also glad that Jon didn't lighten the mood at the end of the show. It's a comedy show first and foremost, but on very rare occasion there isn't going to be any humor to be mined. Mr. Feith is beneath contempt as is the majority of the Bush administration and I'll be thrilled to see the lot of them gone soon. I never miss the Daily Show and Colbert Report - I don't get my news from them inasmuch as I get context, which has helped me hang on to my sanity over the last seven years. Thanks again.
To the one guy: no Jon did NOT acknowledge the war being legit, he basically said that the war in Iraq was groundless and had no real proof so human toilets (Feith) HAD to sell it to "non-believers" who would then sell it to other human toilets (Powell) to feed to congress and finally the public.
I cannot believe that that go-tard had the guts to tell "us" that we dont remember it right. All offense- he sounds like the guy who uses date-rape drugs to get girls: "No no you were just drunk thats all, but you were so into me..." I dont know if anyone feels the same as I do, but now "real" news makes me so damned angry... hell Im 25 I shouldnt be this angry! but goddamnit even I saw the lie being brought to us before the dumbander in chief sent men and women to die, how could so many people not? We will surely deserve what we get if Quickdrawl McCain gets in office. Id add more but well, I need to shut up, the feds are watching, for sure.
FUCK BUSH AND CHENEY AND THAT HOUSE "NEGRO" CONDI, MAY YOU ALL DIE FOR WHAT YOU PUT US THROUGH! Lets see if they let this pass :D
Rule of Thumb: If someone who is/was employed by the Bush Administration tells you the sun rises in the East, make sure you have a compass in hand at dawn.
And you always know its not going well for the guest when the audience is completely silent.
Seriously though, good job. That was one of the best interviews I’ve seen in a long time. When I saw that this guy was on the show, I said to my wife, “Who ever told him to go on The Daily Show fed him to the wolfs.” I kept waiting for Jon to pull out video and say, “You mean like this? And this? And this? And this?”
When people criticize “political correctness”, this is what political correctness is. It is sanitizing the language of a debate. “Oh the people weren’t ‘lied to.’ The people weren’t even ‘misled.’ If the Administration is guilty of anything its ‘not communicating all of its concerns to the people.’”
Douglas Feith would have us believe that bovine rectal emissions are different than bullshit.
Keeping these guys from squirming out of the questions to avoid the hard answers is a tough job. Keep up the good work JS!
Again and again this non-news show amazes me how much more deep and serious questions are asked then anywhere else. I wish the media would not leave it to comedy central to ask bold questions and not focus on trival matters. I could go on and on but all in all i would like to thank the dailyshow team for giving us, the public, something we dont usually get. please dont stop!
from the bottom of my heart
thank you
