John McCain and Factual Information About Iran Are Not Friends
John McCain does seem intent on hitting Barack Obama over his supposedly wanting to go to third base Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Only problem is: Ahmadinejad isn't actually the leader of Iran. The Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is. (Hence the "Supreme Leader" thing.)
Here's Joe Klein from Time discussing the matter directly with McCain...
One of the following things must be true...
a) John McCain doesn't actually know who the leader of Iran is.
b) John McCain is being disingenuous to some weird political end.
c) Joe Klein is splitting hairs to make John McCain look dumb because he's a jerk.
d) Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are actually the same person.
e) All of the above.

Oh! That's easy. The leader of Canada is Fidel Castro.
The average American probably doesn't even know who the leader of Canada is.
McShame is out of touch.
That's giving "any average American" too much credit. "Any average American" is likely to guess Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein are the leader of Iran before flipping the channel back to American Idol.
Bush and McCain must be cut from the same mold.
Neither knows much about the Middle East beyond Hollywood movies; neither has any inkling about foreign policy; neither knows much about the economy other than the figures in their respective portfolios; and neither could really give a rat's ass about any American other than themselves, as long as they're comfortable.
John McCain needn't know anything about Iran or any other country full of scary brown people. All he needs to know is stating that he would continue to avoid peaceful resolution and hurl sharp objects at countries full of scary brown people will get him elected. Knowing the president plans to attack countries full of scary brown people apparently helps white christians sleep at night. Obama needs to streamline his answer on what our alternatives to waging war on the middle east might be. This will be his biggest hurdle....Aside from the fact that he is a scary brown person. I bet he knows who the ruler of Iran is, though.
I think McCain's biggest gaff in that statement was this: "if you asked any average American who the leader of Iran is, I think they'd know." I think the average American is about as likely to say Gordon Brown as they are Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Also, to the comment prior to mine: the irony of making a spelling error while poking fun (appropriately, I might add - I'm no Bush fan) at someone for their poor English skills is pretty hilarious. Advice: pretend it's intentional. :)
a) I think answers this best. This man makes more gaffs on foreign policy than Bash makes with the English language. I've said this before...Where's Lieberman when McSame needs him?
