Barack Obama vs. Barack Obama Supporters

POSTED BY: CubbyChaser

The Huffington Post is reporting that all is maybe not well between Barack Obama and his liberal lapdog supporters...

Only weeks into the general election campaign and already a notable tension is beginning to materialize within the Democratic Party. At question is Sen. Barack Obama's relationship with the progressive netroots, the online community that helped aid the Senator's rise to the presidential nomination, but has since seemingly played second fiddle in terms of courted constituencies.

Whaaaaaat? How can this be?

Here's how it all went down. Over the weekend, Barack Obama announced that -- although not in favor of the idea of retroactive immunity for the shady corporatations that helped our own government spy on us -- he supports the FISA legislation that the Senate is about to pass that will magically make all the illegal wire-tapping that the White House did legal after all.

But it's all alright, because he super double-dog swears that, as president, he won't take advantage of the power to watch over all of America like Big Brother...

"Given the legitimate threats we face, providing effective intelligence collection tools with appropriate safeguards is too important to delay. So I support the compromise, but do so with a firm pledge that as president, I will carefully monitor the program," Obama said in a statement hours after the House approved the legislation 293-129.

Oh, well, he seems like a nice man. How can you mind surrendering your Constitutional rights to someone so charming?

Anyway, uber-lib Glenn Greenwald over at Salon was quick to get all "Waa waa waa, I don't want the Constition Constitution* torn to shreds" on Obama's ass...

It is absolutely false that the only unconstitutional and destructive provision of this "compromise" bill is the telecom amnesty part. It's true that most people working to defeat the Cheney/Rockefeller bill viewed opposition to telecom amnesty as the most politically potent way to defeat the bill, but the bill's expansion of warrantless eavesdropping powers vested in the President, and its evisceration of safeguards against abuses of those powers, is at least as long-lasting and destructive as the telecom amnesty provisions.

The bill legalizes many of the warrantless eavesdropping activities George Bush secretly and illegally ordered in 2001. Those warrantless eavesdropping powers violate core Fourth Amendment protections.

And Barack Obama now supports all of it, and will vote it into law. Those are just facts.

Isn't it just like a liberal to want to conserve our inalienable rights and keep the federal government from amassing too much power? Fucking predictable.

  3. I notice AT&T is a corporate sponsor of your site, and here you are calling out Glenn Greenwald as a whiny liberal. You stinking whore! Enjoy your monthly unlimited text messaging plan, or whatever perks your overlords threw your way in exchange for your loyalty. I hope it's worth the Fourth Amendment.

  4. Oh come on guys. Let's all get real here. I mean, the Obama man is so close to the Oval Office that his balls are three times their normal size. His bloodshot eyes bug out at least five inches from his head. He in a constant "drool" state. He can smell it. He is gonna have the power. And now you are asking to give some of it up? After Bush worked so hard to get it? It kinda gets to you, right here, that he won't be able to play with all that power he worked so hard to amass. Good for Democrats, not so good for Republicans.

I just hope he does the right thing with all that power and sticks it to Whitey, just like his wife promised.

(disclaimer: before you decide to write nasty replies this is what is known as humor. I did not think I would have to point this out but after reading some other comments I am not so sure... I like Mr. Obama, I even plan to vote for him. Mostly so they can stick it to whitey).

  5. Glenn Greenwald is a progressive. Which is possibly a way of saying "ultra-liberal," or also a way of saying "a staunch believer in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the founding principles of this country."

  6. Now I know that Obama wants to attract Republicans to his campaign but for crying out loud can someone please tell him that he doesn't have to adopt the policies of King George Bush is in order to do it? I think Obama's position on FISA severely damaged the structure of the Democrat's big tent. And as anyone knows once the foundation for the tent is damaged it won't be long before the tent collapses under it's own weight.

  7. This is just another sign (like Kerry losing in 2004) that the American public is not ready for democracy. Everyone is convinced (including Obama) that pandering to public perceptions will win elections and that our recent history proves it. It looks like all we can hope for in Sen. Obama is someone who is not as bad as Sen. McCain.

  8. I'm scheduled for an Obama strategy meeting tomorrow with paid Obama staff. I'll be handing in my yard signs and Obamamama T-shirt. The money I would have saent to Obama is going to a pledge for a " money bomb" to strangebedfellows. Check out breakthematrix.com/strangebedfellows. This is a coalition of liberals (like myself) and libertarians on issues like FISA.

  9. Obama is being pushed to the right and going along with it, because of the stupid Democratic leadership. Those people who have a track record of losing elections have now decided to cover their own asses, when it comes to knowing about Bush illegally spying on U.S. citizens. Then they want to say that their "compromise" bill will "unify" the Democratic Party? Someone is whistling in the dark. Do they really think we're that stupid? Yes. They do.

  10. FYI, Obama has hinted he'd be going after the telecoms if elected, Immunity bill or no. And btw, McCain has flip-flopped on yet another issue: He is NOW supporting immunity for the telecoms.

Two shades of the same shit, but it looks better on Obama. (There's at least a CHANCE of some justice with O).
