Sarah Palin Might Want To Revisit Abstinence-Only Education

POSTED BY: Dylan Ris

Shockingly, the holy surge of abstinence-only education implemented by the Bush Administration has failed to curtail pregnancies among unwed teenage daughters of Alaska governors running for Vice President.

Although the threat of birth defects is minimal in this demographic, there remains a substantial risk of humiliating a national presidential campaign, having your name brandished across the top of every blog on the internet, and proving that “abstinence only ed” is a fucking joke.

While making light of someone’s unwanted pregnancy shouldn’t be a common practice, the fact that both John McCain and Sarah Palin have promoted abstinence-only education for years opens the floodgates for second-guessing.

Furthermore, the Palin family’s penchant for unusual baby names also opens the Vegas books, as speculators start placing bets on the name of this latest addition.  (Note that Piper, Trig, and Track have already been taken, but, hey, what about Mitt?  It could be a warm gesture to a man Palin beat out for VP!)

  1. Does Sarah Palin have a professional degree? Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin attended the following schools Hawaii Pacific University (Fall 1982), North Idaho College (Spring 1983 & Fall 1983), University of Idaho (Fall 1984 - Spring 1985), Matanuska-Susitna College (Fall 1985) and she finally received a bachelor's degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho (Spring 1986, Fall 1986 and Spring 1987). Senator John McCain did not use good judgment once again, the proof is by choosing Palin as his running mate. If she was chosen so that Senator McCain will receive votes from women, Senator McCain is suggesting that women are dumb!

  3. If gov. Palin supports teaching creationism along with the big bang theory why not teach abstinence along with the pull out method?

  4. Saying that one example of failure means the whole policy has failed is a fast sign that the person making this claim is an extreme moron. (And that person's parents should have been the ones using birth control -- a number of years ago.)

The recent trend of fools claiming “abstinence-only” education is somehow to blame for teen pregnancies is an unfortunate off-shoot of this dialogue. The people making this claim offer no proof and no tangible connection between the two concepts. Last I checked, journalism was supposed to be about facts, and one side has provided zero to back up its claims. To me, zero facts = zero credibility, yet these people go right on chanting.
The other laughable part of their claim comes when they make some ad hominem claim like: “I have sex, and I’m monogamous,” as if somehow the accomplishment of connecting a reproductive organ with someone else on a consistent basis makes the person an expert on what national education policy should be.
Also, a monogamous sexual relationship — even if it were somehow relevant to the shaping of national policy — would be mostly irrelevant to the target audience, which is students in their early teens. Yet this piece of logic manages to slip past the anti-responsibility crowd.
Finally, these people claim to be “street smart,” yet they are selectively ignorant of the existence of anyone who has dealt with an unintended pregnancy. They also cling to percentages that should raise their awareness of the risk of a life-changing event, but somehow they rationalize these into a belief they’re at no risk at all.
Anyway, we haven’t addressed the myriad people with these beliefs who simply are not ready for a sexual relationship, but we’ll save that one for another session. Remember, responsibility is the only factual, rational decision here.

  5. Sarah Palin was herself pregnant before she was married (check dates on her Wikipedia entry), so this is a second generation problem... Apparently Sara Palin isn't intelligent enough to recognize the pattern and realize that abstinence-only policy doesn't work... Who wants stupidity and hypocrisy in a vice-presidential candidate?

  6. Jamee.... well said.

Palin's / McCain policy of not allowing sex education in the schools is a disservice to our young people who are confronted with this issue on a daily basis. The Republican position that we would confuse kids if we provided birth control does not address reality. You solve a problem by acknowledging it and addressing it head on, NOT by saying it is something we can't talk about.

And yes we are going to have to raise taxes. Bush has used the US "line of credit" and mortgaged our future to the hilt. Spend and borrow today... thinking someone else will pay in the future is how we Americans got into this subprime mess. If we don't balance our budget, we can soon expect that China and the oil nations of the world will own all of America.

    Let get realistic.

  7. Honestly, I don't give two hoots about Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter. All of this is 'scandal', not issues. The fact is Sarah Palin and John McCain support a governmnent being able to tell a woman she can't have any abortion. I am pro-choice, but that doesn't mean I am for abortion. I personally believe children are blessings from God, but not everyone shares my feelings. Bristol Palin will be just fine, her mom is a governor. What those young girls in Harlem, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Detroit, etc. who can not afford to take care of a baby. Repubicans would have that girl become a mother (and sometines a father) with the knowledge that she is unable to emotionally and finacially care for that child. And since Republicans are bent on cutting government spending on programs like Welfare and WIC, what's a young woman to do. Republicans accuse Democrats of wanting to make government bigger, but cetainly taking away a woman's right to make decisions that will shape her life is giving any governent more power than it should have.

  8. I'm guessing that abstinence (pretending there is no planting) used as birth control is as effective as the rhythm method (better known as off season planting).

  9. What in the world is going on here?? I looked at this woman's resume. How are we suppose to know who this woman is? McCain doesn't know who she is, (God forbid)if she became president of this Country she’s going to forget about her family and study night & day on foreign affairs in a big fat hurry. I don't know about you, but that's some scary stuff people!! I fault McCain for this dumb stupid decision! I read someone say, “what do the Democrats want, a woman barefoot & pregnant?” Well I’m sure she has been barefoot, and as far as pregnant, she has got that covered too!! Whew, what a Royal mess!!
