Barack Obama Thinks About Military Service Completely Backwards

POSTED BY: Ethan Ris

Barack Obama has divulged in an interview with ABC News that he once considered joining the military...

In an exclusive "This Week" interview, Obama told George Stephanopoulos that he considered joining the military after finishing high school.

"I had to sign up for selective service when I graduated from High School," he explained. "I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and you know, honorable option."

Obama suggested his decision not to enlist was an issue of timing, not service. "I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it's not an option that I ever decided to pursue," he said.

Gotta admit here that I'm confused. Obama thought strongly about joining the military, but didn't do it because the Vietnam War was over.

What was his thought process? "Well, I'd like to sign up, but now we're in peacetime. I'd probably spend my time hanging out at some base in California, doing nothing but playing ping pong and receiving generous benefits and money for college. Nah. If you don't get to get shot and die for a worthless cause in a Vietnamese jungle, what's the point?"

  1. Though i think your assuming a bit much here and putting words in Obama's mouth, I would also like to point out Stephanopoulos' clear discrimination. His show, called "This Week," is clearly an assault on weeks past and approaching. How can anyone take a news program that is so hateful towards all other times and clearly "present leaning" ?
Furthermore, it Mr. S. is clearly a racist against those whose ethinic lineage does not include countries outside of or not adjacent to the African continent.
He might as well have said "I'd interview anyone next week, or last week, but this week is the only week that has or will have ever mattered."

  2. "Obama is a sexist, Racist, ,Liar." I can top that. McCain is a feminist, truth-telling, civil-rights, peacenick, liberal, with a big belief in helping the poor and those with savings under 100k.

  3. The Selective Service requirement to register at the age of 18 was suspended by President Ford in 1975 by Proclamation 4360. Then, in 1980, Jimmy Carter reversed that decision by issuing Proclamation 4771. So for Obama to say that he had to register in 1979 is false. By Carter's Executive Order, he would have had to retroactively register. I would be interested to see the actual date of his registration. Is this just another Obama lie to make himself look more palatable to the American public? I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

  5. Obama is an enpty suit full with a mouth full of glib fancy rhetoric. His logic for not joining the military is BS. I'm a Vietnam-era US Navy veteran and damn proud to have been able to serve my country. There was no hot "war" when I enlisted, just a "cold war" with the threat of nuclear annhilation, but then along came Vietnam. I knew what I was in for and put in my 6 years without question and was proud to do so. Still am proud. Obama could have joined any number of military organizations. If he was so interested in the poor and downtrodden he could have joined the US Coast Guard and helped prevent illegal drugs from entering this country, the very drugs that make the poor oppressed minorities a burden to the rest of society. He could have joined any other branch of the military and received technical training in hundreds of fields, eventually using GI Bill benefits to obtain a college degree in something other than "community organizing". Obama's excuse for not joining the military is hogwash and BS, just like the rest of his campaign.

  6. If you all can stop with the cynicism for a minute...
It's pretty clear that he's saying he would have joined the military if there was a war on because he would have been needed. With no war at that time, he decided to serve his country where he was needed -- by serving his community, which is always what the conservatives say "citizens" should do even though they rarely ever do it themselves. So Obama committed himself to improving his country by starting with his own backyard -- his community. How about that, Tammy Lynn and xfctr?! This shows integrity and committment to making a positive change for his country. But all some haters can do is call him names and scorn his hard work and his honesty. It seems that Barack Obama loves his country more than some folks will ever be able to acknowledge. Oh well, it's their loss.
